This presentation was to go over the Wife of Bath story, here are some key points:
Fairies and Friars
Fairies and Friars
- Speaks of the beliefs that there were once elves and fairies that inhabited the area
- Tale of the magical old hag was actually a folk story.
- Original story focused more on “true beauty lies within” - not exactly the Wife of Bath's moral
- Now, however, friars and other church members have pushed out all the fairies and inhabit the entire isle.
- While fairies may have been dangerous and could take advantage of women, friars weren't much better
- The story is being told to a friar – mocking him perhaps?
- Shows that it was common knowledge that not all members of the church were righteous or holy
- Reinforces the Wife of Bath's statement that women ultimately want control over their husbands
- Pretty clear throughout the story that people are very motivated by sex
- Initial rape
- Stories of folk beliefs and friars raping women
- The Knight's main protest comes when the old woman wants sex
- The old hag wants someone to have sex with
- This is not the “Chivalry” or “Courtly love” that we are taught
- The old woman's final prayer
- Overriding theme for the Wife of Bath
- The Wife's husbands that she could not control
- King Arthur deferring to his wife
- Knight's salvation comes through women
- Canterbury Tales are probably meant for the Gentrified nobles and members of the Court
- Much of the story appeases male demographic, however this is telling them that their wives want them to be meek
